simplest form isn't so simple:( Fonts, and maybe a freebie???

Happy Tuesday! It has been a  rainy one over here in NC...I mean, rain ALL DAY. It hasn't stopped! I kinda want to crawl into bed and just watch TV! Maybe if I can accomplish a few things off my list for tonight I can do just that!

I have been teaching fractions now for awhile. Just this past week I started teaching finding the simplest form! After yesterday, I wanted to pull my hair out! About 6 kids got it and the rest...ugh! These kids are really getting fractions too, but this part...not so much!

So today I tried more of a visual way! I used drawing out fact family trees and it really helped! Many kids, even the ones that really struggle with math finally got it! So today after work, while sitting at Starbucks (waiting for my cat to be ready at the vet-he had 7 teeth pulled today)  I made these posters to give them tomorrow!

I added some practice problems and there is my remediation group activity for tomorrow!

Does anyone have a way they teach simplest form their kids? Leave a suggestion with your email and you might find yourself with a goodie in your mailbox;)

Another thing I have started working on is a new TV show theme set of fonts. If you can guess what this new TV show is, I will email you my font license for free! It is another favorite show of mine. It is still currently on and is in it's 9th season

And last but not least, don't forget about my sale and my mega 700 follower giveaway! The sale ends tomorrow night!

Here's to getting things accomplished tonight so I can relax!

  2. I have to say I don't teach simplest fractions. I have never got that way before, but these posters are awesome. I love the step by step procedure to tie it all together. I wish I had a suggestion because I would love to use these in the classroom. I don't watch much TV so I don't know if this is still on....I will guess The Office or How I Met Your Mother.

Still loving all the fraction stuff. This is new to me in third grade now that we are transitioning to CCS.

  3. My guess for your favorite show is Grey's Anatomy. It is one of my favorite shows and they are in their ninth season. You could come up with some great font names from that series!

  5. I hate simplifying for third graders. We mentioned it but they don't quite understand WHAT simplest form means. I taught a couple of my higher ones to do something similar. If the fraction was 4/12 they would write the factors this way...
    1, 2, 4 (They would write the 1 and 4 first, then the 2)
    1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 (they would do the 1 and 4, then the 2 and 6, and so on...using the two factors)
Then I have them circle the biggest one they have in common (GCF) and divide the numerator and denominator by that number BUT I like your method a LOT better. I am storing this idea for next year!

  6. It is always a difficult concept to teach!
I used the method found on E is for Explore website. It seems to work well for my kiddos!

  8. Is is Gray's Anatomy? I don't watch it but I know it has been on for quite a while. Also, your posters for simplest form seem like a great idea. Simple yet get the point across.

  9. First, I hope the kitty was OK. 7 teeth! Wow! You must make a McDreamy font because that is just the best name. Simplest form posters are great. A visual that makes sense for the kiddos. Love it!

  10. I never wanted to teach simplest form until I saw that the test presented fractions this way, and of course, I want my students prepared. I too teach using greatest common factor, but I like your visual way of doing it. Gets them prepared for prime factorization and factor trees as well. I hope to see your simplest form unit pack. That would be cool. I also think a McDreamy font is a must!!! :) haha!
