Last year was the first time I used Whole Brain Teaching. I didn't use the Super Improvers Wall, but instead used a ton of other classroom management strategies. I realized I had TOO many rewards, incentives, points, prizes, (you get the picture) going on. I always forgot to do one thing or the other. So my goal this year was to really focus on one positive management plan!
I have been using the SIW tied with my weekly behavior sheet! So far... this was the best week yet:)
Since I was loving Whole Brain Teaching, I wanted to put my focus into the Super Improvers Wall.
Sorry for the bad glare!
I downloaded the free cards from Tara West over at Little Minds at Work. They are just perfect!
Students have to earn 10 tokens (what I call them) to move up the SIW. I found these at a teacher store here on Oahu.
I put them in this ID carrier I always wear around my neck. It has 2 zippers. It is perfect because I can hand out tokens in line, at recess, really anywhere:)
Students keep their tokens in a zipper pouch I provided. I ordered them off of Amazon! Inside the zipper pouch is also a steno book. They glue their tokens on there so they don't lose them.
When students get their 10 tokens they get their star on the SIW
There are 10 colors to match the 10 colors in Tara's freebie! My stars are free too. You can get them HERE.
I also give them two Starburst candies for earning their star;)
I just made this cute label today! If you are all interested, I can make it into a freebie for you:)
I also let them pick a reward coupon! I bought them from Mel D
I cut them all up and place them inside of my talking frog:)
The kids close their eyes and pick one out!
They are LOVING it! I am up to 5 kids on beginner. I have a few close to learner!
I plan on making some certificates to go with moving up the SIW. I will post those when I am done!
How do you use the SIW? I would love to hear some other ways!
Enjoy your weekend friends!
Love this!!! Will definitely be using this next year :) Thanks for the 411. Glad today was a better day for you! Thank goodness it's Friday!!!

Teaching in Paradise
I am going to be using WBT this year. I had my class from last year for the week, so I tried out the Class/Yes, Teach/Okay, and Scoreboard on them. This morning we talked about it and they gave me really constructive feedback on how it was working. I am very impressed with how quickly it changed the behavior. I am so looking forward to trying it with my new class next week. I have Tara's cards all cut and laminated so that I can introduce them to my class.
ReplyDeleteI found it difficult to use the scoreboard effectively, because I was not always near it when I wanted to mark down a tally. I think I might make a smaller board to wear around my neck so that it is with me as I move around. The only glitch will be that I have to wear a microphone for a hearing impaired child. The two things around my neck might not work.
I look forward to following your journey with WBT and I hope to be sharing mine too. Thanks for the insights.

You can entrust the scoreboard to a student who can keep a small whiteboard or laminated card at desk to record
DeleteI use the SIW with my 4th graders. I give students index cards and have a heart whole punch that I use. Students can earn punches for having homework completed daily and improving academically in their subjects.

I use these same signs. That you for sharing how you use these. I started my WBT journey this year too. I am excited to see how other people are using it.

DeleteI just read about Whole Brain Teaching 2 weeks ago. I've been reading everything I can find online about it since then. I like your idea about using the reward cards as a grab bag. I have been using those cards for a few years, but I let the students choose. Some take forever to choose. lol! I'm going to change it to a grab bag instead. Much quicker. Also, I was looking for a way to include them in the Super Improver Wall. Thanks for the tip! :)
ReplyDeleteHi :) Did you ever make your "BURSTING WITH IMPROVEMENT" sign a freebie?? I would love it if you did!! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteIt's in my Super Improver's Freebie on TpT:)
DeleteIs your label for Starbursts still on TPT? I can't find it :(

About how many weeks/months did it take for some of your students to reach the "genius" level?
ReplyDeleteWhen students reached the "genius" level, do they start over? -Thanks!
