Happy Tuesday!

Place Value Differentiated Centers and how I plan to use them!

I am SO happy with how these turned out! I have wanted to make some centers like this for a very long time....and I WILL make more:)

These centers are based on 2nd Grade Common Core standards NBT.1, NBT.3 and NBT.4

I have 4 centers and each center has 3 levels

I have also made a black and white unit just in case someone doesn't want to use all the color!

The 4 games include:

You can get this unit HERE! I have it 20% off 10/14 and 10/15 only!

I would love to give one away for FREE! Just leave a comment and I will pick a winner 10/15 when I get home from work!

Now...how do I plan to use it???
I have 4 centers in my classroom
In each center basket I have 3 folders
A yellow, blue and green;)
The 1 in the corner is because these folders belong in basket 1

I also have colored dots to match the colored folders

I have student names by a number. That number represents which center they go to for that day. I will put a colored dot under their name to show them which folder from that center bucket they get to play.
Each day I just rotate the numbers so they go to a different center each day.
I have yet to put the dots under their name because I have not graded their pretest for place value. Once I get the pretest graded I will be able to see which group they belong in!

I only have students go to one center a day because that is all my time allows me for.

Don't we all wish we had more time!

I hope you are all having a great week so far!

Taste the Arrays

My kiddos are having a blast with arrays! I am impressed with how well they have picked it up! Their pretests were horrible but I am sure their post tests will be superb!

Today we played a game I made called
Taste the Arrays!

I gave each student two fun size bags of Skittles, this way they would have at least 25. They also got a recording mat I made and a paper towel.
I displayed on the board an array sentence and the students had to use their skittles to make the array!

Then after everyone made their array, I showed the answer on the board.

The kids LOVED it!

When we finished going through all the sentences, we went back through and made repeated addition sentences for each one! And of course they got to eat them!

Is this something you would like to do with your class? Leave a comment below and I will pick a winner Wednesday night Hawaii time!

Hope your Monday was marvelous:)

Whitewater rafting, savenger hunt with a twist, and measurement problem solving

Happy Friday!!! This week has been SUPER long and I am thankful it is Friday! It has been a CRAZY Friday though! tornado warnings during bus dismissal and then I stopped to pick up dinner at Lime and the rain just came down with super strong winds. We all had to move into the kitchen! It was so scary! Luckily, I am home now...relaxed and ready to get some stuff done!

Yesterday was a LONGGGG day! I was at school by 5:45am and left about 6:30pm! The 3rd graders went on our big field trip! I want to share a few pictures with you! They are so far away, I didn't blur out any faces!

The kids LOVED it and that was all they talked about today! I hope the team gets to take them back next year!

I have yet another twist on how to do a scavenger hunt! So I bought these awesome task cards from Teachesthirdingeorgia from TpT!

They were just perfect for my mass and volume objectives review! We have a test on Monday...that I need to make!

Instead of a traditional scoot or cards around the room for a scavenger hunt I did it this way!

I made 12 copies of each card, cut them out and laid them on my desk. The kids worked in pairs. I apologize in advance for the horrible pictures. I forgot my ipad today! Had to use my phone:(

Each pair had to solve one question at a time. When they got the answer they came up to me to check it. If they got it right, I gave them a small card with a letter on it. They needed to glue the letter on a white piece of paper.

Once they got their letter they got to get the second card. When they answered the second card, showed me, got it right, they got a second smaller card with a letter!

I was doing a secret code!

The kids seriously ATE THIS UP! They were flying through this, laughing, working, moving, and having fun!

Here are some other pictures of the process

Once they finished their code, they got a sweet treat:)

I would highly recommend doing this. You can do it for any task card set! I had 20 task cards and this saying has 20 letters! I also had HERE IS YOUR SWEET TREAT

I am attaching my file for
HERE IS YOUR SWEET TREAT
and
COME GET YOUR SWEET TREAT

Just click HERE!

Another thing I did this week to help student's practice mass and volume was a bit of problem solving!
I made 14 word problems with this graphic organizer. I broke my class into pairs and they had to solve their word problem. Once they solved it, they check their work with me! Once I gave the go-ahead, they used chart paper to make it bigger.
I gave each student a blank copy of the word problems. Each pair had to come up and teach the rest of the class how to solve their problem while they had the blank copy in front of them!
And of course...forgot to take pictures that day! So sorry, no pictures:(
But, this is something I am putting up in my store! If you are interested in winning this for free, just leave a comment below and I will pick someone on tomorrow afternoon!

Life has been pretty busy this week so I apologize for not uploading a few new products to my store. I am adding my Nonfiction unit
I am also adding that time scavenger hunt a few people asked for!
and a few other math things! Be on the look out for those new items this weekend!

I hope you all have a great weekend! Be safe everyone!

Scavenger hunt...review game style! Plus what's coming soon!

Happy almost Friday! Thanks everyone for the sweet comments on my one year blogaversary! It means a lot! Also don't forget about my sale going on!
You got two more days to shop, save and get some freebies!

So the other day I did NOT have my observation! I really think my AP was feeling bad for me. On Tuesday I had no voice, Wednesday I sounded like a man, and today it was crackly. It is almost back! The coughing meds are helping and breaking up what's in my chest.

I was sad though she didn't come because my math lesson that day ROCKED. Oh well:( But I want to share the idea with you!

Have you ever done a scavenger hunt around your room? I have before with task cards. I would give students a recording sheet and they would have to go around the room and find the cards and write down the answers on the recording sheet. Then we would all gather back together and go over them. Well, today's scavenger hunt was a bit different!

I gave each student one of these
a blank PowerPoint handout with 14 slides.

Before we started this lesson I placed 14 questions around the room! By each question was a smaller bag of the questions!

They took the questions out of the bag, glued them on the blank square and worked on the question right there with their partner.

I did it this way because there would have been no point of a scavenger hunt if I just gave them the PowerPoint with the questions. I also wanted them to glue the questions on instead of just having a recoding sheet because I wanted them to really work through each problem.

They had so much fun walking around the room with their partner looking for the questions. It took them a good hour, maybe a bit more, to find each question and solve it. I like having movement in my room that also involves learning. It's a lot more fun than just sitting down and doing review problems!

Here are some pictures of them hard at work!

I did not spend too much time on making this unit, so I don't have it in my stores. Is this something any of you would be interested in having? If so, I can work on it to make it sell-able!

I just worked on outlining a few things for the next two weeks. I have some major units I plan on making this weekend! Be on the lookout for...

Nonfiction writing unit
Mass and volume in metric
Comparing and contrasting themes, settings and characters with stories by the same author
Data and graphing project

Very thankful I have some time this weekend! Have a great Friday tomorrow!

Geome"TREE"

We have been studying geometry for a few weeks now! I hated geometry as a kid, but I think it is fun to teach! It's strange that some kids are so brilliant in math and have such a hard time with geometry! Weird...

I found this super cute pin on Pinterest but can't find the original source:(

Students made a geome"TREE"!

So I had my kids make their own too! They made their own geome"tree" from one of these topics
-lines and line segments-
-polygons-
-angles-
-quadrilaterals-

No outlines, no guides, it was ALL them! From scratch!

I LOVE how they turned out!

Then today we played a geometry review game I made!

I would project a question on the board. Students would work with their partner to solve it on a white board. When I said SHOW they held up their boards. If they got it right, they would roll the die and place the number in the box. I used double die to make it an extra step of multiplying the numbers together:)

Then after all the questions were done, they added up their points!
Score on a geometry, multiplication, and addition lesson:)

This game has 27 questions for students to answer!

Directions how to play and materials you will need

A recording sheet for their dice rolls

The kids really enjoyed playing the game today!

Another way I think this would be fun, would be to place the questions around the room like a scavenger hunt! They can check their OWN answers by flipping over the paper.

I am working on adding this to my TpT and TN stores tonight...maybe! I have to get up early.

Make a guess to what I am drinking right now and you will win this for free! Please don't duplicate an answer!

Kathy was also my winner of my Author's Purpose and Quadrilaterals activities. Check your email!

Have a great night and a very happy Friday tomorrow:)
