New and Improved Math Block plus Math Journals

I really enjoy teaching math which is strange coming from the girl who struggled a lot with math growing up and throughout high school! Funny thing is, my high school math teacher was the one who really made me want to be a teacher! I always thought about it, but never acted upon it. Mr. Hess was the best teacher I have ever had! He would come in early and stay late just to make sure you understood what he was teaching. He brought humor and fun into what is usually a boring high school math class. I remember hearing about his very last day of work and how the school got him a limo. The limo picked him up from his house, brought him to work, took him to lunch, and then back home at the end of the day. He truly was the best! Thanks Hessman-as we all called you! I love hearing about his retirement life on Facebook! It's great to catch up with him every now and then!

So, my love for math has really grown over the years as I have felt more comfortable with teaching the same grade for 4 years now.

Today, I bring you my new and improved math block!
And at the end of this post, I promise you a chance to win something:)

I teach math daily from 1:30-2:50
Here is my breakdown of my math block

From 1:30-1:40 I get in a whole group mini lesson. This is where I introduce the topic for the day. Usually with a video or a chart that I have made.

Then they move into 3 groups that I have selected. Each group gets 20 minutes at their rotation. When students come to me, we are working on activities for that day's topic. If they get it right away and it is too easy, I will work with them on something a bit more challenging on the same topic or review a different topic.

If some students get it and some don't, I may give the ones that get it an independent practice activity and the others will stay with me for the rest of that 20 minutes and get more help.

When they are not with me the other two rotations are math choices. There are 5 choices to choose from. They pick 2 a day. Since there are 5 days in a week, they go to each center twice a week.

They keep track of what centers they picked with this sheet

The blue and pink circles have their class number on it. I did the two colors to match what center they are at: blue for center 1 and pink for center 2

Their math choices are:
Math Technology
I have math game links on my class website they can pick to play! Pretty straight forward

Math with Someone
This is where they play games to reinforce math skills previously taught

Math Facts
This is where they practice facts independently with Number of the Day and Let's Multiply

Math by Myself
this is their math calendar I change out weekly. The math calendar has 12 questions on it that relate to objectives I have taught already. This helps me spiral some objectives since our pacing guide doesn't do that.

They use these sheets to record their answers

Math Writing
This is where my new math journals are coming into play! I just LOVE how they turned out!

In this unit, you can get

I practiced ONE problem whole group the other day with my class, and it took 40 minutes! They really thought it was a TON of work to do one problem, but they also said it was very helpful. The one problem we picked to do was 6 steps! They were shocked! They thought math problems only had one, two or maybe three steps!

This math writing center is designed to have students WRITE out their thinking when solving a multistep problem. They have to explain each step, and at the end I had them write a summary of how they solved that problem! Here is a look at one student's example of the 6 step problem we did!

I also had them write the problem out on the top!

This is just one of the many graphic organizers I made in this unit pack. I just liked how this one worked for me and my kids.

What I also did different in this unit was make it editable! So if you don't like this

You could use this and make your own math journal requirements

I wanted teachers to be able to put their own spin on this depending on how they plan on using it in the classroom

The 20 word problems vary with how many steps. I really tried hard to create multistep problems that required higher level thinking skills. I also included an answer key!

With the last 10 minutes I have, I like to bring everyone back together and talk about the day in math. What did we learn, are there any questions, that kind of thing.

Here is my updated math focus board! I love it!

So far so good with these new improvements! I hope it stays that way;

I would LOVE to giveaway my Math Journals Unit Pack. All you need to do is leave a comment below! I will select a winner TOMORROW night! And if you can't wait to see if you won, I have it up in both of my shops!

If you have any questions about my math block, just ask! See you all tomorrow with some new fonts!

Meet Carla, BAZINGA, Fractions, Character Traits, and Cause and Effect...

 LONG post...sorry!

So...went to the doctor this morning because I still was not feeling good. And well....I have strep:( YUCK! It turned in a matter of just a few minutes and my throat is as red as red can be! It's been really hard to eat today! Strep has also ruined my weekend plans! My hubby and I were looking forward in going out for dinner and drinks with some friends...so so mad! So instead, I have been home, napping, watching TV, and working on units and fonts. Hubby is also sleeping. It's been a quiet day!

So my other friend that I met with last weekend started her blog last night!!! I am SO excited for her. I have had the privilege of working on the same grade level with Carla for two years! She is an AMAZING teacher! She always has the funniest stories of what her kiddos say to her!

You can check her new blog out at Don't Touch the Gong. There is a funny story behind her blog title! Maybe she will tell it one of these days!

Just like I did with my friend Jess, I will give YOU something for FREE if you...
  1. follow her blog
  2. leave a comment with a helpful hint and a link to a place she can get fonts, clipart or helpful ideas
  3. comment on my blog with your email so I can send you something
If you do these 3 things, I will give you ANY one set of task cards from my shop...YOU pick! So go over there now:) I promise you, you won't be disappointed!

Meet my new font...TR BAZINGA

I just had a blast making this font! I am making a list of characters from The Big Bang Theory or funny sayings to name my fonts! Anyone have a new idea for a name? So far some ideas I have are:
TR Soft Kitty
TR Howard's Mom
TR Justice League
TR Kripky
TR Flash
TR Leslie Winkle
TR Wil Wheaton

Just remember, if you use my fonts, you must give credit back to me!

Moving on:)
(Can you tell I have been inside all day???)

We have been studying fractions and my kids just LOVE them! They can see I love teaching them so they are really getting it. This week we use Christina Brainbridge's Fraction Kites activity! I have done this now for 3 years!

They turned out sooo cute!

Then we also worked on Character Traits and how they change from the beginning of the story to the end of the story! I used Lori's activity from Conversations in Literacy!

We read a story I printed out from Reading A-Z called Harold the Dummy. It was nice to print books out for each student. They were able to use a pencil to write down the character traits and then highlight in the book where they found the evidence!

And last, we worked on Cause and Effect this week. Last year I found Amy Lemon's...side note...congrats on such a BEAUTIFUL baby girl, I LOVE your pictures... Camilla Cream from A Bad Case of Stripes activity...so.much.fun!

First we listened to the story for FREE on StoryOnline

We talked about cause and effects and how to find them in a story or a passage. The next day we listened to the story again only to pause it every time they heard a cause and effect. This is the list they came up with

Then they started to create their own sentence using signal words.

Next, they worked on their craft part!

And Finally...

I love it!

OK, this post was seriously long enough! So sorry! I will be back tomorrow with my Math Journals and Math Block how to!

I'm off to go eat some ice cream! See you tomorrow!

It's been a great day and a look at what's next!

First off, thank you SO much for going over to my friend Jess's new blog Twenty-Six Minutes for lunch! Every time we saw each other today at school we were talking about YOU...yes YOU, the awesome bloggers out there! So thank you! I have emailed the goodies to those who commented on my page and left their email:)

I also this morning tried on a pair of jeans that hasn't fit in a LONG time...like, last April...and they FIT! I text my trainer at 6:00am and told her! I just had to. I knew I wasn't waking her up because she is out the door running at 4:00am! NUTS!

THEN...I have a former parent, who is now needing hours in her education classes, come in to my room today with HOT Starbucks! She.made.my.day...for real!

Got out of work, went to the gym, and now relaxing tying to work on a few things but in all honesty...I just want to go to bed! Hubby doesn't get up for another hour to get ready for work so I guess I need to wait until then!

So...the other day my coworker and I were planning together. We started looking at the pacing guide for the end of the year and seeing what was left in math to teach.

This is the time of year where students REALLY start to feel the pressure, get anxious, and worry about the dreaded END OF GRADE TESTING. In 3rd grade they have NEVER taken a test like this before...EVER. That is one downfall to teaching 3rd. And the parents...them too! They feel the same pressure.

Anyways, back to planning part. We started to think of a way to group the kids for our remediation/review right before the EOG's. Well, that's where THIS is going to come in...

I am in the process of making a 3rd grade end of the year math cumulative assessment! This will have every math Common Core standard with questions for each. It will be long, I won't lie about that. So it will take me a bit to get it done. But, my goal for this test is for us teachers to see where students need help! How we can group students to best meet their needs for review and remediation.

Is there anything you would like to see on this assessment? If so, I would love to hear it!

Have a great night!

Last night was a BLAST! My two friends both opened up TPT shops and started to think about a fun and unique name for their blog! I can't wait unit they are all set up and then I can introduce you to them!

So if you read my currently yesterday, my to do list said:
HAHAHA...I wish! Maybe someday!

It really said...

Well...I accomplished ALL of them and even did laundry! I just need to have my hubby mail off my paperwork tomorrow and I am all set! Then the waiting game begins!

Is anyone interested in looking at my resume? I am always so nervous about my typing and spelling...I am sure I could use some help!

In the middle of all that, I was able to make one more font! I bring you TR Amy Farrah Fowler

I don't think just TR Amy would have been the same:) Just make sure if you use the font you link it back to me:)

Last weekend I asked a question and no one got it right! This was to win my Valentine's Day You are just "write" for me gift tags!

The question was...what is my favorite flavor smoothie at this moment? I even gave a clue it was TWO flavors. Then I gave a second clue and said it Strawberry was one of them. No one was able to guess the second flavor.

SO, I am opening this giveaway back up for round TWO. Can you guess my favorite smoothie flavor??
