My new take on a positive behavior management system!

Before I begin, let me share with you a new addition to my 300 follower giveaway! Terri from The First Grade Princess has generously donated a $5.00 Starbucks gift card! Now, this is not an ordinary gift card, it is one all the way from Hawaii! Make sure if you win, you don't give the card to the Barista when the card is empty! You will want to hang on to this one! I am going to give it to the first place winner! Please make sure if you have entered my giveaway that you head over to Terri's blog, be a follower and leave her a really nice comment:) It was so cool of her to do this:)

Ok...so here is my problem! I made those super cute clip charts for my tables...remember those? Well, I am not going to do it now! See...a problem! In all honesty, I really hate the idea of a clip chart. I was browsing though Pinterest last night and found the most.perfect.positive.behavior.plan.ever!

Staci, over at Whole Brain Teaching has this thing called The Super Improver Wall. Now, I am not sure if this is a whole brain teaching strategy because I just started reading up on it...so it may or may not be her original idea. This is her wall...
This is how she runs her board...
"As for my Super Improver Wall, every student has their own card with 10 different colored levels.  They get to place their stars on the bottom color, which I have labeled as Fiery Red.  Once they earn 10 stars, they move up to the next level, which is Sunny Yellow, and so on.  After four levels, they get their silly picture taken, which is turned backwards until they earn 5 more stars.  Then they get to flip it over and continue up their card!  This is working wonderfully for me, so I wanted to share it.  It keeps me from having to change their names on different colors, and it saves on stars because they can pick whatever color star they want to place on the different colored levels!  I love how they applaud each other when someone in the class earns a star."

Well, I was instantly hooked! I knew this was exactly what I have been looking for....for years! I started coming up with ways of how I can use this! This is my plan!

There are 10 different colors kids can “level up” to. I like the level up because it sounds like a video game!

When they earn 10 stickers they can get a new color card. There is no moving down
cards, only moving up. It may take them all year to get to the 10th card (that would be 90 stickers) and some may get to start all over again!

I plan on having smaller prizes when they level up. Like a pencil, a book mark, eraser, and other things. When they get levels higher they can earn lunch with me or extra recess…something like that.

I also plan on teaching the kids cheers so when someone levels up they can do a quick cheer. This way, others see kids leveling up and they will want to as well.

I will still have think about it cards and my behavior book to use as needed. I really wanted something super positive this year and I hope this works!

So what do you think? I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO excited to try this out! So this morning this is what I started...Yup a whole behavior plan you can purchase! I just am not quite done yet!

Then...I went out to the store to buy a few thing I needed for my new system...of course I did;)

Target Dollar spot
-pencils
-erasers
-bookmarks
-badges

Michaels
-colored cardstock...already in 10 different colors, just waiting for me to cut it into squares

In the past, I have used a jewelry hanging thing to hold cards or tickets the kids have earned and it has worked out wonderfully. The problem was, mine is falling apart. So, I went to TJ Maxx and bought a new one! Perfect! 30 card slots! And the bottom ones can hold the other color cards and the stickers:) Or I may just use the purple pocket charts from Target...I Just haven't decided yet! I have 30 days to return it;)
So, I am not completely done with it yet, but when I do, I will be blogging about it for sure. What do you think? Leave me a comment and you might just get the unit for FREE:)

One last thing (I can never have a short post...I need to learn how)! I have completed a few other fun things that I want to show you! You can get them both today in my TPT and TN stores:)

1. My Portable Word Wall
I saw this great idea on Pinterest about having your word wall portable so kids can take it to their seat! I hate when I see word walls so HIGH up that kids can't even see it!

I think the students will really like this:)

2. You are....door sign!
I know you have seen this on Pinterest! I just love this poem/message! It will be on my door or on the side where the can see it every day! It's a little crooked on the floor... so sorry!

Hope you like everything! Don't forget about my 300 follower giveaway!

  1. For the behavior chart, do you give the stickers at the end of the day? One good thing about the clip chart is they get instant down or up when I tell them to change it. So waiting for the end of the day to give stickers - I usually forget by the end of the day. Did I get this wrong?

    1. No, I don't think you have the clip chart wrong. I really just hate having that negative part of the clip chart. I hate telling kids to clip down. Last year was the first year in 4 years I have had to use it. I have always just had a responsive classroom approach!

Nope, just like the clip chart, if I see them doing something really good, they can go place a sticker on their color card..just like having them go move their clip. This just focuses on the positive!

  2. I really like the idea of positives only. Will you have pre made squares drawn on the cards where the stars will go or will they just place the stars where ever they like? Then bring it to you when they have 10 stars? It sounds like a lovely idea!!! Just a question...what DO you do for handling students that break rules? What if not receiving a star/cheer isn't enough to curb their negative behavior? Do you just call/write home? I've always used a clip chart of some sort but kids always had the chance of moving the clothespins up and most of them were able to do this. I don't like the idea of it being out in the open either but hey, the kids know who have behavior issues in class. I always looked at it as a positive thing because kids with behavior issues got lots of praise and cheers when they were able to move their clip up. It is a tough one to tackle isn't it. I really like this idea though and I am looking forward to hearing more about what you'll do with it. I know you'll come up with something awesome!!!

    1. When kids don't act right I have always given warnings, then a think about it card (which is a card that just says think about it) to sit on their desk, and then if they don't fix it still they go right for my behavior book. This is a form that they fill out and goes home. We set a consequence together(student and I) and the parents sign and bring it back. One year I never had a kid write in the behavior book-it just never got to that point, and one year only 2 kids wrote in it. It works very well.

  10. What a great idea ... I love the idea of this plan (just another reason why I follow you!). I've never had a behavior plan that worked well and I'm hoping to change that this year. And I love the positive rewards! Can't wait to see the final product! I know you've already had proofreader offers, but if you do need anything else proofread in the future, I'd be happy to.

  11. I like the positive side of the behavior chart. The idea of giving them a sticker is instant reinforcement of making good choices. I always hated having the same kids turning their cards for making bad choices. I would give the students who stayed on green all month a prize from the prize box but it was always the same ones who got the prizes. I think when the students see the others getting a sticker they will try harder because they are not being penalized by changing their card. I really like this idea. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

  12. I've always done a clip chart system where the kids could move up for good behavior or down for poor choices. I'm really interested in this new leveling up system, but I have a few questions. What types of behavior do you give stickers for? For example, if all of my students walk nicely and quietly in line, they would all move their clips up when we got back to class. Would you give everyone a sticker at that time? That's just one of the questions I have. Is there any way you could email me to discuss more?

  13. If kids are all walking in line nice and quiet, then we would earn a whole class reward-like my tadpole tokens or my behavior bingo. I am using Level Up as an individual reward, like the clip chart is for. I am sure, like you, some teachers do use the clip chart for whole class stuff...which is awesome. It is all up to the teacher in how they want to use it!

  14. I just stumbled across your blog and it is great! I love the behavior system. I often find it hard to reward those kids who are always "on it!" Where did you find the great font you used on the portable word wall?

    Thanks,

  17. What a fantastic idea with leveling up! My school has adopted the responsive classroom techniques and we are really pushing to get rid of our color charts and the negative aspects of it. Thank you so much for this great idea. It will make for a much less stressful transition for me as I attempt my first year without my beloved chart. Lol!
